West Baray – Siem Reap’s Giant Ancient Reservoir

Boat ride West Baray

West Baray is the largest ancient reservoir (baray) built during the Angkor period and remains one of the most impressive hydraulic structures in Southeast Asia. Located west of Siem Reap, this massive man-made lake stretches across the countryside, offering wide open views, cool breezes, and a peaceful local atmosphere.

Unlike Angkor’s temple complexes, West Baray feels more like a living place—where history, nature, and daily Khmer life meet. Locals come here to relax, swim, eat, and enjoy the water, especially during the hot season.

My Experience Visiting West Baray by Scooter

Scooter at West Baray Siem Reap

I rented a scooter for $12 per day and started from Siem Reap city at 3:00 PM on 11 January 2026.

To get there, I entered the West Baray area through Wat Svay Romeat Pagoda. I stopped for about 5 minutes to look around the pagoda, then continued riding toward the west dam crest along a gravel path.

On the right side, the view opens up to the huge reservoir filled with water, and in the middle you can clearly see West Mebon Baray Temple sitting on an island.

Riding Along the Dam Crest
I continued riding along the dam crest until I reached the Baray Spillway area. This is one of the most lively spots around West Baray.

Here you’ll find:

Souvenir shops
Many food stalls
Snacks and drinks
Parking areas
Sitting areas
Swimming spots

Most local people like to swim here, especially during the hot season from March to May, when the water level is lower and the water becomes very clear. You can also rent a boat here to ride out to West Mebon Temple in the middle of the reservoir.

Exploring Further
If you continue riding west, you’ll see Ak Yum Temple on the left side. This small temple dates back to the 7th century, making it even older than Angkor Wat.

Along the edge of the reservoir, there are many food stores, and locals also call this area West Baray—another popular swimming place.

From the middle section, I turned right toward the north. From here, you get a full panoramic view of the reservoir, the island temple in the center, and on the right side, you can even spot Phnom Bakheng Temple in the distance.

Although it’s possible to ride all the way around the dam crest, I didn’t do the full loop this time. Instead, I stopped and chilled out for about 15 minutes, enjoying the cool air and wide open views, before heading back to the city.

Riding Back to Siem Reap
On the return, I turned south and followed National Road 6, then headed east back to the city.

⚠️ This is a busy road with high-speed traffic, so if you’re not confident riding a scooter or bicycle, please be very careful.

There is also an option to use loop roads if you want to avoid busy highways.

History of West Baray

West Baray Mebon Temple

West Baray was constructed in the 11th century under King Suryavarman I. It played a crucial role in Angkor’s advanced water management system, supplying irrigation for agriculture and supporting the empire’s growth.

In the center of the reservoir sits West Mebon Temple, which likely served a religious purpose connected to water rituals. The scale of West Baray shows how important water control was to the success of the ancient Khmer civilization.

Even today, West Baray still holds water and continues to support local life.
