My Experience Visiting

Scooter at Pre Rup Temple

I reached Pre Rup at 2:30 PM by scooter from Siem Reap city. There are two parking areas:
South side Under the trees, and East side recommended to use an extra lock.

Since the sun was already moving toward the west, I started exploring from the south side, where the light was perfect for photography. The warm tones on the brick and the clear afternoon shadows made the temple look beautiful.
Even though it was Sunday, the temple wasn’t crowded at this time. This is why I love visiting in November–December—the weather is cool, the trees are green with a touch of yellow, and the sky is usually deep blue with white clouds. The environment feels refreshing and bright.

Climbing to the top gave me a panoramic view of the surrounding forest and rice fields. The breeze was strong, and the warm afternoon light made everything glow. It reminded me why Pre Rup is one of the best sunset temples in Siem Reap. I spent about 30 minutes enjoying the view and taking photos before moving on.

History of the Temple

Front view of Pre Rup Temple

Pre Rup was built in the 10th century (961 AD) by King Rajendravarman II. It represents the classic “temple-mountain” layout, symbolizing Mount Meru, the sacred center of the universe in Hindu mythology. The structure is built mainly from laterite, sandstone, and brick, giving it its signature warm red color.

The temple name “Pre Rup” means “turning the body” in Khmer, relating to an ancient cremation practice, though historians are not fully sure about this interpretation. The three central towers are dedicated to Shiva, and the temple once served as the king’s state temple.
